Original boards. No jacket. Seller Inventory JD Harry Rountree illustrator. The top and bottom of the spine and the corners of the boards are a little worn. This book has grey pictorial covers and 92 illustrations inside by Harry Rountree. The bottom of the text block is a little grubby and the biding is a little loose. Inside the front cover there are a couple of places where is looks as though someone has glued something in and then removed it leaving some brown card. A couple of the pages have some small smudge marks on too. These are shown in the photographs supplied.
Condition: Fine. Recently rebound in full leather calf with gilt tooling and raised bands. Small name to inner page. New Edition. No ownership marks. The first written version of the story which was to become 'Alice in Wonderland'. Beginning life as a story told by Charles Dodgson Lewis Carroll to Alice Liddell and her sisters on a summer boat-trip on 4 July , 'Alice s Adventures Under Ground' was written out and illustrated by Dodgson later that year, and given to Alice as an early Christmas present on 26 November Dodgson's friends encouraged him to publish the manuscript, and a revised version, with illustrations by John Tenniel some of which are perhaps influenced by Dodgson's own drawings , was printed as 'Alice in Wonderland' in This book is the first edition, limited to copies, of the facsimile of Dodgson's original manuscript.
Dodgson had considerable difficulties getting the facsimile printed: the photographer employed to reproduce the manuscript absconded with some of the negatives, and it took a legal summons and Dodgson's own appearance in court to retrieve them. In he wrote to Alice Liddell now Mrs Hargreaves that 'I have had almost as many adventures in getting that unfortunate facsimile finished, Above ground, as your namesake had Under it! This is a very good hardback copy in the original illustrated cloth covers, the spine has perhaps at some time been mended.
